Why Isn’t My Website Showing Up on Google?

If you cannot find your own website on Google, something is off. Here are the real reasons a site does not show up, and how to fix each one.

Short answer

A website usually does not show up on Google for one of six reasons: it has not been indexed yet, the domain is too new, something is blocking crawlers (a robots.txt rule or a leftover noindex tag), the page has little readable text, no other sites link to it, or, for local searches, there is no Google Business Profile. Ranking for your own business name should happen within a week or two of being indexed; competitive local terms take months.

You searched your business on Google and you are not there. Or you searched what you do plus your city and found everyone except yourself. It is frustrating, and it usually points to one of a handful of fixable problems. Here is what is actually going on.

First, check if Google even knows you exist

Go to Google and search site:yourdomain.com (use your real domain). If results come up, Google has your pages indexed. If nothing comes up, Google has not indexed your site at all, which is the most common reason a new website is invisible.

New sites are not crawled instantly. It can take days or weeks. You can speed this up by setting up Google Search Console, submitting your sitemap, and using the URL Inspection tool to request indexing for your important pages.

Your site is too new

If your domain is only a few months old, this is normal. Google is cautious with new websites. It takes time to build trust, and until then you will sit far down the results even for terms you should rank for. There is no shortcut here. Keep publishing, keep earning links, and the position climbs over months, not days.

You are accidentally blocking Google

Sometimes a site tells Google to stay away without the owner realizing it. Two things to check:

  • robots.txt: Visit yourdomain.com/robots.txt. If you see “Disallow: /” under “User-agent: *”, you are blocking the entire site.
  • noindex tags: A leftover “noindex” tag from development will keep pages out of search. This happens constantly when a site launches and nobody removes the staging settings.

There is nothing on the page for Google to read

If your site is built so that the content only appears after JavaScript runs, or it is mostly images with little real text, Google may not see much to rank. Your pages need actual written content that describes what you do, where you do it, and who you do it for.

Your pages do not match what people search

This one is sneaky. Your homepage might be beautiful and say “Welcome” and “We do great work,” but if it never says what you actually do and where, Google has nothing to match against a search. If you want to rank for “plumber in Calgary,” those words, and content around them, need to be on the page.

You have no other sites linking to you

Google treats links from other websites like votes of confidence. A brand new site with zero links has nothing vouching for it, so it stays buried no matter how good it looks. Getting a handful of real, relevant links, from suppliers, local directories, partners, or press, is one of the biggest levers for moving up.

It is a local search and you have no Google Business Profile

If you are a local business, a lot of the searches that matter happen in the map section at the top of the results. That section is powered by Google Business Profiles, not websites. If you do not have a verified profile, you are invisible in local search no matter how good your website is. Set one up, verify it, and keep it filled out.

So how long until it works?

Ranking for your own business name should happen within a week or two of being indexed. Ranking for competitive local terms like “web design Calgary” takes months of content and link building. If your site is brand new and you are not showing up for competitive terms yet, that is expected, not broken.

Bottom line

Run through the list: is your site indexed, is anything blocking Google, does the page actually say what you do and where, do any other sites link to you, and do you have a Business Profile. Most invisibility problems come down to one of those.
